About

Not only is the flowing tide one of Dublin’s best known pubs, it is also one of the oldest, with a history that makes it a must see for both locals and visitors
A proudly traditional pub in the heart of the city where a great atmosphere comes as standard it is one of those increasingly rare establishments where the character of ‘auld Dublin’ is preserved. With it’s proximity to ‘The Abbey’ the national theatre, it is a popular pub with actors, it has an eccentric and artistic air, the pub where plain talk and highfalutin conversation flow naturally together. It is also something of an architectural gem, possessing a classic stone-cut external facade of a kind now uncommon in the capital, the interior adorned with beautiful stained glass showing magnificent scenes of Dublin city. Rarely will you discover a pub that has so strong a sense of its own identity.

Profile Description

Situated across the road from the world famous Abbey Theatre, The Flowing Tide has long been associated with many of Irelands finest artistic talents, legends such as Gabriel Byrne, Siobhan McKenna and Cyril Cusack have been known to drop by after a show. In addition, the Flowing Tide was the main source of refuge following the riots that accompanied the showing of Synge’s “Playboy of the Western World” in 1907! Over the years, The Flowing Tide has developed into one of those increasingly rare establishments where the character of ‘Auld Dublin’ is engrained into the soul of the premises. Authentic olde world décor, including a rare classic stone cut external façade, stained glass windows and frieze over the bar depicting the Greek masks of comedy and tragedy, give the Flowing Tide an ambience that is hard to match.
