Originally owned by Charlie St. George (RIP), a former rugby great, who won a Bateman Cup in 1928 with Young Munster, resulted in the public house having long traditions with sport, especially rugby. Photographs and memorabilia celebrating Young Munster victories over the last 4 decades hang on the walls within the pub.
Charlie St George’s most famous customer, now deceased, was Richard Harris (RIP). He affectionately referred to “Charlies” as his “second home” and “favourite pub” and was a frequent visitor to the establishment when home in his native city. Several walls within the pub are dedicated to Richard Harris, celebrating his sporting, acting and musical achievements. Many other famous characters that have enjoyed an evening in “Charlies” included Russell Crowe and the famous Irish boxer, Kevin McBride.
