The late Robert A. Merry founded the firm of “Merry” as a bottling company in Dungarvan in the year 1868. The business grew steadily and in 1883 an extensive bonded warehouse in Beau Street was opened in the fine premises at 5&6 the mall, Waterford. It was here that Merrys stored their wide range of whiskeys in selected casks where they took particular pride in the fact that they were one of the largest holders of Old pot Still Whiskey in the South of Ireland. They also stocked popular brands of scotch whiskeys. It was through this that the business’ reputation for giving good value and excellent quality was established and “Merrys” soon became a household name.
Merrys business continued expanding to include shipping wines, Sherries, ports clarets and Burgundies of the highest standard, which were bought directly from countries such as Portugal, Spain and France. Merrys was also celebrated for its bottled beers. They began with Guinness Extra Stout and for over 60 years handled this world famous stout under their own label where their white label was a warranty itself guaranteeing the perfect bottle of stout. They were the largest bottlers of Bass & Co. Ales in the Irish Free State and always promoted the sale of home produce including the well known Waterford Ale – Kielys XX
Merrys expertise grew to include luxurious blends of both tea and coffee where Merrys took every precaution to give the best procurable quality to their customers. They believed in purity, taste and strength to ensure a well-flavoured tea and finely roasted coffee. They also guaranteed that their provisions business was conducted in a most up to date manor, at lower main Street, Dungarvan. Supplies of bacon, sausages and pork steaks were received daily and dairy products were always available fresh.
Throughout the years Merrys food and drink stock was second to none and their commitment to their customers ensured that they provided this standard of excellence at an honest price. This tradition is still maintained today. Merrys Bar & Restaurant (Gastro Pub) endeavours uphold the enviable reputation for the quality and freshness of our food by using local & organic produce where possible and to ensure our customers receive an excellent level of service of which Robert A. Merry would be proud.
